Nob's Ne'er-do-wells set out to rescue his cousin

Nob Brandyfoot has cobbled together quite the motley crew for his father’s task, rescuing his nephew who has boarded himself into his own home. If an insane wizard, an alcoholic former lawyer, a failed prospector, a swordsman with delusions of grandeur and a layabout halfling can’t do it… then nobody would really be surprised. If by some chance they succeed, then perhaps his father will trust them with a task of some real significance.

They arrive in the cousin’s small rural village. They swiftly find a town council of sorts who relays to them the gravity of the situation. Ever since some children uncovered ‘the hole’ by rolling a boulder away from its entrance, people have been dying in their sleep at night, all from the families of those who uncovered the mysterious hole. One of the children was dragged down into the hole screaming.

Our heroes/murderhobos ventured forthwith to the hole. MORTYR, LORD OF FIRE interpreted the magical runes on the exterior. It is a tomb of some unknown figure. After crawling through a long, narrow passage, they emerge in a chamber of clamoring skulls, and are set upon by skeletons. Lucius raises his holy symbol aloft, demanding that the foul beasts retreat back from whence they came. No light beams from the symbol of Gulivi that he holds aloft, and Lucius vomits up sour wine instead of a ray of holy magic. Not a moment later, Rolf charges into battle, sword spinning like a hurricane, decapitating five skeletons in a mighty whirlwind of blade and bone. Though his foot hurts a lot more than it did five minutes ago with that skeleton’s spear stuck in it now.

Before the party can really have time to investigate, Odayon wanders off deeper into the darkness after dancing lights. Despite the best attempts of the others to restrain him, he runs headlong through dark passages and nearly drowns himself in a basin of water. MORTYR, LORD OF FIRE’s vast arcane knowledge indicates the nature of the room, one for holy ceremonies. Lucius, confident that the Lords will punish him no further, attempts a cleansing ritual. And the Lords don’t, other than a sigil of a burning horse that suddenly appears on his head. You know, that ol’ thing.

The following room contains only a sarcophagus. The party attempt to open it for valuables, but three are caught by an un-noticed spear trap, and have no treasure from the great coffin to show for it. The miscellaneous treasures strewn about are hastily packed into a sack by the prospector, who generously offers to take all of the haul outside.

The murderhobos, injured and sick but not completely drained, head to another chamber. Rolf checks and finds signs of the missing girl in the dust while Lucius investigates a statue which appears to be of the Lords of Law and Chaos. Lucius feels the burning sigil on his forehead burrow into his mind, whispering thoughts that are not his own. Just before his eyes cloud over, his body ceases to obey his commands and he floats into the air, he half thinks, half prays “Surely, if the Lords have any mercy among them, THIS will be as bad as it gets.”

Success never felt so much like failure

While Mortyr, Nob, Rolf, and Lucius were continuing to muck about in the mysterious crypt outside Skogenby, Odayon was employing his trademark business acumen by relaxing outside, safe with the big bag of loot waiting until the dupes his friends either had their fill of the incredibly dangerous hole or died therein. His self-congratulatory ruminations were interrupted by one Beronin “The Covetous” and company…

…Meanwhile, Lucius’ dramatic floating forehead-sigil burning show was also being interrupted. When the words “I AM HAATHOR-VASH, IRON QUEEN OF THE BLOOD RIDERS! WHO DARES DEFILE MY…” emanated from Lucius’ twisted mouth in a voice like the wind howling through dead winter branches, his three compatriots sprang into action. Nob ran for his life and Rolf froze in indecision and growing horror as Mortyr promptly immolated Lucius to a fine ash.

On his way out of the Crypt, Nob found the loot bag wedged in the narrow entrance tunnel, where Odayon had managed to shove it before being drug out for an otherwise thorough mugging.

With the three remaining partners unable to track Odayon’s captors in the dark, they resolved to camp and resume efforts in the morning. They did manage to locate a perfect campsite, only to discover it was also the favorite watering hole of a rather irate Devil Boar. After a sound thrashing, they escaped intact save for having dropped the spoils to fight. Fortune smiled on them soon after, however, as Nob was able to outwit the beast and retrieve the bag and, close to morning, a beaten and robbed Odayon wandered into camp from having been left unconscious nearby.

The following day, one more attempt was made and penetrating the mysteries of the crypt of Haathor-Vash, but despite some almost-clever burgling involving a secret door and hallucinogenic gas, and another surprisingly excellent display of swordsmanship, Nob and Rolf found themselves too worn down and ill-equipped to press much further inward. Poor Jora, if she is still alive and inside, would simply have to wait.

Arriving back in Skogenby, the village was keen to hear the details of the adventure, hoping to discover Jora’s fate and find some assurance that the locals would stop mysteriously dying in the night. However, the crowd assembled to hear Mortyr’s relation of events broke into a panic when the vengeful ghost of Lucius appeared and threatened wordless accusation at the mad wizard. In the ensuing chaos, a hut was set ablaze.

Feeling suddenly unwelcome in Skogenby, the four remaining partners set about completing the task Ronwald Brandyfoot originally sent them here to do: extract Nob’s cousin Mayweather. A little waiting for Mayweather to undo his barricaded door and a little fast talking, and the group was collecting their horses to return to the The House of Three Squires.

Relief and a well-earned rest was approaching fast when a distant arrhythmic sound set a tone of unease. It turned out to be the unbarred front gate of the palisade of the Three Squires, occasionally slamming home as it swung in the wind. Something is wrong here. A cursory search of the premises has found the interior in disarray, the furniture, patrons, Nob’s parents, and other staff all missing, with a pool of blood in front of the cellar door disturbed by wide scrape-marks leading across the threshold. Yes, something is definitely quite wrong here…

Attack of the Kobolds

Nob, Rolf and Odayon followed the bloody trail as it lead to the cellar. Odayon noticed a familiar smell, unmistakable as Kobold. However, Nob—eager to find his family—rushed in anyways. The Kobolds had rigged the staircase to collapse as soon as more weight than a single kobold stepped on it, and he was sent tumbling into the pitch black cellar. From there he was far too scared to do anything else, and just trembled until he was captured and put in a cage of some kind.

Meanwhile, Rolf and Odayon were quick footed enough to avoid the drop and jumped back. They looked around and found a giant set of antlers (one wonders how halflings even carried in) and turned it into a makeshift ladder.

With the ladder at the ready, they were able to rescue Nob without difficulty. While doing so, they heard voices, and in the cold room found 3 more adventurers who had been stuffed in a pit [I can’t remember the character names and they’re not in Obsidian yet]. It seems the Kobolds captured them and stole all their belongings. They also found a cute little dog. Odayon remembered that dogs are anathema to Kobolds.

Nob wanting to save his family, Rolf wanting to save things as a general rule, the new additions wanting their stuff, and Odayon wanting friends, they all filled their bellies with some delicious Brandywine Sour Ale, and set off down the Kobold tunnel.

They started to fight the first group of Kobolds they came across and as yet neither side has made any progress. Will our heroes defeat the Kobolds and save everything? Will they total party whip? Tune in next time to find out.
